When you’re out and about, do you need different cables or adapters to use any of the charging points you find? The simple answer is yes, most EV chargers are similar, though some require different connectors for fast (DC) charging.

Here’s a closer look at what you need to know about EV chargers, their types, and how they work.

Are EV chargers universal?
While most EV chargers work across various makes and models, they are not completely universal. The type of connector and charging level (power output) determine whether your vehicle will be compatible. With the government’s push to phase out petrol and diesel cars, more people are investing in electric vehicles. In fact, new homes in England must have an EV charger installed if built from 15 June 2022 onward.

If you’re considering installing an EV charger at home or just want to understand the differences, this guide will help clarify which charging cables and connectors you might encounter.

Are all electric car chargers the same?
Essentially, yes – most chargers will work with most EVs, but there are different power levels that affect how quickly they can charge your car. Electric car charging comes in three levels:

Level 1 – Slow charging
These chargers use a standard three-pin plug (120 volts AC in the UK). They typically come with the car when you buy it and are suitable for emergency top-ups, though very slow at about 4 miles of range per hour. Level 1 charging is best avoided for long-term use because it can be inefficient and slow.

Level 2 – Fast charging
Level 2 chargers use 240 volts AC, offering speeds up to 22kW (though 7kW is most common for home use). This type of charging is much faster and typically installed at home or found at workplaces. It’s around three times faster than Level 1, delivering roughly 16 miles of range per hour.

Level 3 – Rapid charging
Rapid chargers use DC power at 480 volts. These chargers are the quickest, adding about 20 miles per minute and can fully charge your vehicle in 20 minutes to an hour. Found mostly at public charging stations, Level 3 chargers are ideal for longer journeys or quick top-ups on the go. Tesla Superchargers now support other EVs with updated connectors, not just Tesla’s.

EV charging cable types
The differences in EV charger types are matched by differences in cable types. Most AC chargers are untethered, so you bring your own cable. DC chargers usually have cables built-in (tethered).

Here are the main types:

  • Type 1 (AC charging): Common in American and Asian vehicles, this single-phase plug has 5 pins and a latch for secure connection. It can deliver up to 7.4kW of power, suitable for home or small workplace use.

  • Type 2 (AC charging): The European standard, Type 2 can handle both single and three-phase charging. With 7 pins and a locking pin, it delivers up to 22kW for home use and up to 43kW at public chargers.

  • Type 2 CCS (DC charging): An upgraded Type 2 plug, this system adds two extra pins for rapid charging. It can deliver up to 170kW, though most stations offer around 50kW.

  • CHAdeMO (DC charging): A 10-pin plug supporting up to 50kW, used in a few UK models like the Nissan Leaf. It is being phased out in favour of CCS connectors and Tesla’s system.

How do I know which charger type to use?
When you bought your EV, the dealership would have provided this information. You can also check your car’s handbook to find out which cables and connectors you need.

Do any electric cars have special chargers?
Tesla used to have exclusive chargers for its cars, called Tesla Superchargers. However, newer V3 and V4 Superchargers now work with other EVs using the CCS connector.

Yes, through a process called regenerative braking. This captures energy when you brake and returns it to the battery, recovering around 15-30% of the energy and extending your driving range.
